How to Remove Stains from Clothes
As a mum of three children, who love to get messy with outside play and paint; I've learnt some super valuable tips with restoring used clothing.
These tips will not only help you to keep your favourite clothing items in excellent condition but also helps to keep more clothing in circulation and out of the landfill!
How to Remove Stains
Before...
I've managed to save 100s of items from the landfill, just by getting rid of pesky stains! Whether is food stains, grease, pen or paint. An absolute must for stains is soaking and it can really transform an item back to its original condition!
The jumper in the images arrived at Little Ones Preloved with shadow stains all over the arms, sleeves and front. It was a huge shame as the jumper was from M&S and was a Looney Tunes design, plus my eldest had her eye on it!
Recipe for a stain soak:
- 1 part white vinegar
- 1 part bicarbonate of soda
- A dash of pink stuff stain remover or Vanish
- Soak in a bowl of warm/hot water for a few hours, but make sure the water isn't too hot or colours could bleed and prints could get damaged!

How to Remove Pen & Grease Stains
Before
Now this tip is especially handy, for when you purchase second hand items and they come with the previous owners name written in them! Which is highly likely kids clothes, especially in school wear and coats! Pen and grease can be a little trickier to get out but I've found a special ingredient that is the super hero for this stains.
Recipe for removing pen & grease stains:
- 1 part white vinegar - easier in a spray bottle
- 1 part bicarbonate of soda
- A dab dish soap on the stain and rub in, fairy liquid is amazing!
- A dash of pink stuff stain remover or Vanish
- Soak in a bowl of warm/hot water for a few hours, but make sure the water isn't too hot or colours could bleed and prints could get damaged!

Now isn't that a transformation! Both these items looked quite worn when I first received them and I was able to restore them back to their original condition, all they needed was a little care too!
