How to sell your Children's Second Hand Clothing
All the tips you need to know about selling your children's second hand clothes
The idea of selling your children's second clothes and making a few pounds can sound exciting. Those few pounds can be put towards your children's next size clothing, birthday gifts or bills and they certainly can help.
In 2023, more parents than ever are looking to shop Preloved which not only helps to save those pennies but also helps to lower their carbon footprint. As a parent, I've found myself concerned for my children's future in this world. With global warming and the environmental crisis, I'm looking at ways to swap normal household jobs and purchases to a sustainable and eco friendly alternative.
There are many online selling platforms that can be used for advertising your children's second hand clothing, but simply listing and advertising doesn't mean you'll hear that kerching and make a sale. So I'm here to give you some important tips to guide you to make that first sale!
Photography
The first and most important part of your listing is always going to be your photo or photos!
1. Take clear images in daylight. No dark, dimmed images as they can cause the items to appear differently than ever described and the true colour may not be reflected in the image.
2. Quality image. Try to ensure your image is of high quality, most smart phones have a decent camera but make sure your image isn't blurry too.
3. Cleanliness, it's always a great idea to ensure that the item is clean and ready for sale. 'just needs a wash' can easily put any buyer off.
4. freshly ironed item always stands out too! Crinkled piles of clothes can make it hard to establish the condition of an item.
5. The background is another crucial part of your photo, personally I don't find images on floors off putting, and I don't think they should be. But pictures of items surrounded with rubbish & clutter can turn most buyers away. Avoid a distracting background too!
6. SAFETY - be cautious when it comes to sharing pictures of your children wearing the clothes you have for sale.
7. If your item has any specific features or is a designer brand, it's a superb idea to take photos of these!
Description
1. Honesty is the best policy, described the items condition and make sure you disclose any imperfections or damage. For imperfections, include images to match. And if you notice imperfections once an item has sold, reach out to your buyer and explain to them. Offer them resolutions, a cancelled sale is better than a bad sale.
2. It's a great idea to also include the size, brand, colours and fitting into the description
3. Be open to questions about the item
Price
1. Pricing your item can be difficult, how do you know if you're underselling? It's fine to feel stuck on what price to settle on.
2. Do your research on selling platforms like eBay & Vinted, check what similar items in similar condition to yours are currently listed at. You can also check the sold eBay listings for completed prices.
3. List your item at the price you have settled on, if it doesn't sell you can always lower the price in increments or just leave it listed at the price you've chosen. It's important to remember that the right buyer just may not have gone along yet.
Shipping
A massive congratulations is due if you've landed that first sale! What a win! Now how do you pack your item to ensure a safe delivery?
- Neatly fold your items ready for packing, you'll be able to fit more in a parcel if you pack it neatly too!
- You can use boxes, parcel bags or packaging around your home. But make sure your item is secured the packaging is not loose, weak or tearable. Sadly, brown parcel paper is not a good idea, as these packages are often seen ripped once they reach their final destination. No one wants missing items from their orders. You can pop some tape around your parcel to secure it further.
- Always send using the courier that you have agreed or advertised to use. If you need to change then communicate this to your buyer. It's important to note that if selling on vinted, you can only send using the selected courier for the sale. Using any other will result in your sale being cancelled and you potentially losing out on both the sale payment and your item.
- Return address, always pop a return address on your parcel. Sadly parcels can still get lost. But did you know, you can increase your chance of your parcel making its way back to you by over 90% when you include that ever so important return address!!
